Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration


Today, the descendants of West Africans brought in bondage to the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia, are striving to preserve a way of life. Gullah is more than simply the language and name of a people. It encompasses the essence of struggle, spirituality, perseverance and tradition.


Leap into this living history beginning February 1st and running through February 29th, 2008, when the Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association, Inc. (NIBCAA) hosts the Twelfth Annual Hilton Head Island Island Gullah Celebration. This unique celebration presents 10-14 events concentrated over four weekends during Black History Month that showcase the arts, crafts, foods and history of the Native Island Gullah people.


A tentative schedule for the 2008 Celebration includes:


  • De Aarts Ob We People XI Art Exhibition and Sale
  • A National Freedom Day Celebration
  • A Celebration of Authors
  • A Taste of Gullah – Come hungry for the Food & Free Entertainment
  • Arts, Crafts & Food Expo – A Total Gullah Experience - President's Day Weekend
